Matterson Departs Eels, Joins Warrington for Super League Stint
The Parramatta Eels have officially announced the immediate release of former State of Origin representative forward, Ryan Matterson, who will link up with the Warrington Wolves in the English Super League for the remainder of the 2025 season. The move sees the 30-year-old forward seek new challenges and playing opportunities abroad, although he remains contracted to the Eels for the 2026 season.
Matterson’s departure comes after a season where he has found first-grade opportunities limited under new Eels head coach Jason Ryles. Despite a stellar career that includes a 2022 State of Origin appearance for New South Wales and nearly 100 games for the Eels since joining in 2020, Matterson has featured in just four NRL matches off the bench this year, spending significant time in the NSW Cup.
Parramatta Eels General Manager of Football, Mark O’Neill, stated, “This is an opportunity for Ryan to explore new challenges and broaden his professional experience in the English Super League. The club extends its best wishes to Ryan for his time with Warrington.”
The loan deal to the Warrington Wolves offers Matterson a chance to reignite his form and play consistent first-grade rugby league. The Wolves, coached by former England international Sam Burgess, are currently in eighth place in the Super League table and will be looking to Matterson’s experience and versatility to bolster their pack as they push for a playoff spot in the latter stages of the season.
Sam Burgess expressed his enthusiasm for the new signing, commenting, “It’s great to add a player of Ryan’s quality to our squad as we approach the back end of the season. His power and presence through the middle, combined with his vast NRL experience, will bring a lot of value to our pack.”
Matterson himself conveyed his excitement about the move, stating, “I’m excited to be joining Warrington for the rest of the 2025 season and can’t wait to get over there. Once I touch down, it’s straight to work. I’m coming in ready to make a real impact and help drive the team towards the play-offs. I’m looking forward to experiencing the Super League and embracing the challenge. I can’t wait to feel the energy and passion of the Warrington fans.”
The seasoned forward, who stands at 194cm and weighs 107kg, brings a wealth of experience from 181 NRL appearances across stints with the Sydney Roosters, Wests Tigers, and Parramatta Eels. He is expected to fly to the UK later this week and could make his debut for the Wolves against Leigh Leopards on August 1st, wearing the number 40 jersey.
While Matterson’s immediate future lies in England, the unique nature of this loan agreement means he remains contracted to the Eels for the 2026 season. This leaves the door open for a potential return to Parramatta, depending on his performance in the Super League and any further opportunities that may arise in Australia or overseas. For now, however, the focus for Ryan Matterson is firmly on making a significant impact for the Warrington Wolves and embracing the challenges of the Super League.
