Todd Golden shares reasons for having NBA buyout option in his new contract.
Todd Golden has brought Florida basketball back to national prominence, guiding the Gators to their third NCAA championship—and their first since 2007.
His success led to a significant reward. On May 6, Golden signed a contract extension worth $40.5 million over six years, which secures his role at Florida through the 2030-31 season.
One notable detail in the new deal is a major reduction in his buyout if he leaves for the NBA. Specifically, if Golden departs for a pro coaching job between April 15, 2026, and March 31, 2028, the buyout would drop to $2 million. In contrast, a college program trying to hire him would owe a buyout in the eight-figure range.
Golden shared why that clause was added.
“You have to give yourself some flexibility when it comes to the college landscape,” he said. “Florida checks all the boxes for me and my family. I see myself being here for a long time. The NBA isn’t something I expect to be drawn to in the near future. But having that kind of option was important for us. Still, I’m committed to being a Gator for the long haul.”
Florida fans are no strangers to NBA intrigue. Billy Donovan accepted a job with the Orlando Magic in 2007 before changing his mind and returning to coach the Gators a week later. Whether Golden eventually follows that path remains to be seen.
