When it comes to starting for the Steelers, Russell Wilson beats Justin Fields.

In the 2024 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers want to have an experienced quarterback spearhead their offence. The team announced on Wednesday that Russell Wilson, an experienced quarterback, will start for them in 2024.

Wilson, who has played in nine Pro Bowls, was released by the Denver Broncos in March and signed a one-year contract with the Steelers. Then, only one day later, Pittsburgh added Justin Fields, the 11th overall pick in 2021, in a trade with the Chicago Bears.

Throughout training camp, even though the Steelers stated there was a quarterback competition, Wilson appeared to be the front-runner to start unless Fields did something truly remarkable to displace him. Despite throwing for 199 yards and successfully completing 19 of his 27 ball attempts in the preseason, Fields was unable to do so. Wilson did not have a particularly impressive stat line—10 passes on 12 tries for 73 yards—but it is crucial to remember that he played more than 50% less snaps than Fields.

To be perfectly honest with you, it wasn’t a difficult decision in the worst sense. It was challenging, but in a good manner. The Steelers’ head coach, Mike Tomlin, stated of his choice, “The decision was difficult because of what they’re capable of doing,” but he also noted that Wilson and Fields “have been really professional.”

The Steelers are now hoping that Wilson’s expertise will help the team, which has had trouble finding a reliable quarterback to play since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement following the 2021 season.
