The Suns have formally announced Jordan Ott as their new head coach.
As anticipated, the Suns have appointed Jordan Ott as their new head coach.
News emerged on Wednesday that Phoenix had selected Ott instead of fellow Cavaliers assistant Johnnie Bryant to take over for Mike Budenholzer. Now, the Suns have made it official with a press release.
“Jordan represents the values of excellence and responsibility that will be central to our approach,” Suns owner Mat Ishbia said in a statement. “He’s energetic, driven, and prepared to step into a head coaching role. His history of player development, building strong team dynamics, and deep knowledge of the game are key attributes as we shape our path forward.”
Ott, who has a shared background at Michigan State with both Ishbia and general manager Brian Gregory, spent the previous season in Cleveland working under Kenny Atkinson, following earlier assistant coaching roles with the Lakers and Nets. In the official press release issued today, the Suns pointed out that Ott “worked closely” with forward Evan Mobley, who earned both Defensive Player of the Year honors and a spot on the All-NBA team for the first time this season.
In a statement of his own, Ott expressed gratitude to the Suns for the chance to lead the team and committed to establishing a winning, hard-working culture in Phoenix. Gregory noted that Ott was selected after a “thorough” search to find a successor for Budenholzer.
“Jordan’s leadership qualities and deep understanding of basketball were consistently impressive, blending a sharp offensive mind with a clear plan for an aggressive defensive style,” Gregory said. “He’s an excellent communicator with an unmatched work ethic, and he aligns perfectly with our goal of building a team identity based on toughness, responsibility, and a structured approach to the game. Jordan brings the determination and competitive spirit we seek in someone leading our culture, and we’re thrilled to have him and his family join the Phoenix community.”
Ott, set to become the Suns’ fourth head coach in as many seasons, has reportedly signed a four-year deal with the team.
The Knicks remain the lone NBA franchise yet to appoint a head coach.
