After the San Francisco 49ers defeated the New Orleans Saints in the preseason, three players might have lost their jobs.

We’re getting close to one of the most challenging periods of the NFL schedule, with only one preseason game left. Roster cutdown day is drawing near, and following the 49ers’ second preseason game against the Saints in New Orleans, there are a few guys for whom that date appears especially dire. Here is my evaluation of three Niners players who might have lost their jobs following the team’s victory over New Orleans on Sunday.

Trent Taylor Taylor was a fifth-round selection in 2017 by the 49ers, and they brought him back in part to fight for a return man job. Taylor had played in that capacity on a regular basis since departing San Francisco in 2020. However, Taylor struggled in that area of the game in the Tennessee Titans preseason opener, and his reception performance against the Saints gave little indication that he should be kept around. Taylor struggled to separate and dropped a certain touchdown late in the second quarter, finishing with just two catches for 12 yards on five catches.

Jacob Cowing, a rookie selected in the fourth round, excelled as a punt returner and receiver in the game despite his problems. The 49ers have come to trust veteran Chris Conley as a valuable special team member and occasionally as a receiving player; therefore, Taylor’s underwhelming performance against New Orleans reinforced the idea that there’s no need to squander a roster spot on keeping him around. Latu Cameron Latu’s numbers appear to be quite good at first glance. Three catches for thirty yards on five targets is a decent performance.

However, Latu’s areas of difficulty were well-known: he had trouble separating when working downfield and, more importantly, he consistently dropped the ball. The 2023 third-round choice made another mistake as his hands remained erratic. Beyond his performance on the pitch, Latu’s usage gave off negative signals. He didn’t play much on special teams, although he did play in the second half. Among his seven snaps, four were used for field goals and extra points.

After an injury-marred rookie season, Latu’s chances of making the roster are severely hampered by the 49ers’ evident lack of trust in him to be a member of their kick coverage squad. Latu seemed to have a slim chance of making the cut because he failed to deliver the kind of performance that was required of him. Lucas Chase Linebacker Ezekiel Turner was one of the free agents the 49ers released this preseason due to his impact on special teams, and Lucas might soon be facing the same outcome.

Although Lucas didn’t have a particularly bad game against the Saints, Darrell Luter Jr.’s excellent coverage play—a former fifth-round pick who helped close the game—may make the slot corner and potential core special team player stand out. Luter was one of just three 49ers to record a special teams tackle, and he played one fewer snap than Lucas overall.

Things are looking gloomy for Lucas, with a player in whom the 49ers committed draft money rising to the occasion and five other corners probably already guaranteed a spot on the depth chart.
